Women using makeup

Q: “Is it allowed for a woman to put on makeup if she leaves her house wearing hijaab?”

Shaikh al-Albaani:

“It is not permissible for a woman who does not wear hijaab, let alone who wears hijaab, to use the makeup of the disbeliever, the makeup of the faasiq (someone who disobeys Allaah by committing major sins). When did you come to know of a certain women’s adornment called a name for which Allaah has not sent down any authority: ‘makeup’? This is a word that neither we nor your forefathers know. Rather, it is a foreign expression for a particular adornment of the faasiq women of Europe; and our women – except those whom Allaah protects – unfortunately imitate them by decorating themselves with this adornment i.e. makeup which has affected the Islamic community. So it is not permissible for a woman.

This reality is a strange paradox: we see a woman on the road wearing an acceptable hijaab – I don’t say the legislated hijaab – who ties what they call an ishaarb, or khimaar which is the Arabic word, and covers her hair, neck, etc., but she has face powder and lipstick on. These are two contradictory matters that conflict and do not go together. What is the reason behind this? It is one of two things: either ignorance and heedlessness of the legislated ruling or following the evil insinuations of shaytaan.

Therefore, we firstly remind the women who are tried with this make-up. Then secondly, we remind the women’s guardians such as a father or husband or brother, as the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Every one of you is a caretaker and every one of you is responsible for what is under his/her care. A man is a caretaker responsible for those under his care…’[1] etc. This is why the Arabic or common proverb states: ‘The horse is part of the horseman.’ So you are the woman’s husband; it is not permissible for you to allow her to go out in this manner which tempts middle-aged men, let alone young men! You, O man, O father, O brother, are supposed have protective jealousy. Why? Because the Prophet ﷺ used to say: ‘A duyyooth will not enter Paradise.’[2] Why? Who is a duyyooth? He is the one who does not have protective jealousy for his womenfolk.”

I will conclude this talk, through which I hope Allaah عز وجل benefits the listeners, with the following narration from the Prophet ﷺ about women of the end of time. He ﷺ said: ‘There are two types of people I haven’t seen yet: men holding whips like the tails of cows who beat people with them, and women who are clothed yet naked, deviants themselves and deviating others, with heads like the humps of Bactrian camels. Curse them for they are cursed. They will not enter Paradise nor smell its fragrance though its fragrance can indeed be smelt from such-and-such distance.’[3] This is how the narration goes. In another narration, he ﷺ said: ‘Whoever kills a mu`aahad (a non-Muslim with whom Muslims have a peace treaty) unlawfully will not smell the fragrance of Paradise though its fragrance can indeed be smelt from a hundred years away.’[4] So the Messenger ﷺ said about these clothed yet naked women who impermissibly display their beauty/adornment: ‘Curse them for they are cursed. They will not enter Paradise nor smell its fragrance, though its fragrance can indeed be smelt from a hundred years away’ as in the second narration.”

Allaah commands you to be good to women

Al-Miqdaam bin Ma`dee Karib (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ stood among the people (and gave a speech), praising Allaah then saying:

Allaah commands you to be good to women, Allaah commands you to be good to women, for they are your mothers, your daughters, your maternal aunts. A man from the People of the Book marries a woman without any thread in her hands yet neither of them parts from the other [until they both pass away in old age].”

Shaikh al-Albaani:

“His statement: without any thread in her hands’ alludes to her being young and poor. In An-Nihaayah: Al-Harbi said: i.e. due to her youth and lack of gentleness, so he would have patience with her until they would both pass away in old age. The intent was to urge his companions to follow the command regarding women and to have patience with them, i.e. the People of the Book would do that with their women.’

I say: They used to do so when they had good character and piety even with a changed religion. Today, on the other hand, they forbid divorce -which Allaah has allowed- and allow fornication and even homosexuality openly!”

Allaah commands you to be good to women

It is recommended for women to pray taraaweeh in the mosque

Q: “Is it best for a woman to perform the night prayer in Ramadhaan (taraaweeh) in her house or at the mosque?”

Shaikh al-Albaani: “Particularly for the night prayer in Ramadhaan, the best thing is what the righteous believing women of the Righteous Predecessors (Salaf as-Saalih) used to do, which is performing it with the congregation of Muslims in the mosques, as opposed to the rest of the months in which case ‘Their houses are better for them’ as the Prophet ﷺ said.”

Q: “So it is recommended (mustahabb) for a woman, as you said, to go out to pray taraaweeh?”

Shaikh al-Albaani: “Didn’t you get the answer to this question already?

Q: “Yes but just to confirm.”

Shaikh al-Albaani: “Yes it is as you said. And it is even more recommended for the 27th night.”

Q: “If a pregnant woman dies before giving birth, and the baby has fully formed and is alive, is it allowed to cut into her abdomen to take out the baby?”

Shaikh al-Albaani:

“It is obligatory, as long as it’s alive. If it isn’t, this is not permissible.”

Q: “What should a woman do if she has to make up fasts from many years, she only makes up a few fasts before the next Ramadhaan comes in and so on?”

Shaikh al-Albaani:

“She has to continue making up the fasts and hasten to do so lest death should come to her (before she is able to make them up).”

A woman is allowed to take public transportation or a taxi by herself given that . . .

Q: “What is the ruling on a woman riding with a driver or taking public transportation by herself?”

Shaikh al-Albaani:

“If there is mixing with men then the ruling is clear: it’s not allowed. But if: 1) there is no mixing, 2) the woman is safe and won’t be abducted as occurs in some places, 3) there is no travelling involved – then it is allowed, otherwise no.”

Q: “What about riding in a taxi by herself with a driver?”

Shaikh al-Albaani:

“If the driver is known (to be trustworthy) and religious, and they are in the middle of the city, there is no objection.”

Q: “This isn’t khalwah (the prohibited seclusion between a man and a woman), right?”

Shaikh al-Albaani:

“No, it’s not khalwah.”[1]

Q: “Is the Friday bath (ghusl) obligatory upon a woman?”

Shaikh al-Albaani:

“If  the Friday prayer fundamentally is not obligatory upon her, then how can the subsidiary issue (the bath) be obligatory when the fundamental (the prayer) isn’t?”[1]

[1] Shaikh Bin Baaz, Shaikh Ibn al-`Uthaimeen and Shaikh Fawzaan likewise said that the Friday bath is specifically for men – those who must attend the Friday prayer – not women.
