Mocking the religion is major disbelief

Q: “With regard to mocking the religion, which was mentioned in Allaah’s Statement: {Say: Was it Allaah and His Aayaat (verses, revelations, proofs, lessons, signs) and His Messenger that you were mocking? Make no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed},[1] is the disbelief here kufr i`tiqaadi (disbelieving by one’s heart) or kufr `amali (disbelieving by one’s limbs)?”[2]

Shaikh al-Albaani:

“No doubt, this is kufr i`tiqaadi, indeed this is disbelief with two horns (i.e. it is clear disbelief) because it is not possible for a believer – no matter how weak his eemaan (faith) is – to mock the Aayaat of Allaah عز وجل. And this type of disbelief is what falls under our previous statement when we were saying that it is not permissible to declare a Muslim to be a disbeliever unless he utters something which would show us what is settled in his heart. So here, his mocking the Aayaat of Allaah عز وجل is the greatest confirmation from him that he does not believe in that which he is mocking. Hence, he is a disbeliever who has committed kufr i`tiqaadi.”

    You wrote kufr amalee is minor kufr, it could be major kufr as well since its about actions. An example is, would you say making sujud to idols is minor kufr?

      baarakallaahu feekum for the comment,

      i explained kufr amalee as minor kufr because this is exactly what the Shaykh himself meant; inshaallaah the following will clarify:

      Shaykh al-Albaani: “Now I ask you, if a Muslim fights another Muslim, has he disbelieved by this fighting?”

      Questioner: “He hasn’t disbelieved, because this is kufr asghar (minor kufr).”

      Shaykh al-Albaani: “Now you are calling this kufr asghar, tayyib, I call this kufr ‘amalee, so what is the difference between me and you? I call this kufr ‘amalee and you call this kufr asghar. Now we say that this is kufr ‘amalee. Why? Because he has acted as the disbelievers act, as… they kill one another… So this is kufr ‘amalee – ‘Insulting a Muslim is fusooq and fighting him is kufr’ – hence it does not expel (the doer) from the religion; but, if along with a Muslim fighting his Muslim brother, he also considers by his heart that his blood is permissible (to shed) while he believes that this person is a Muslim, then his kufr ‘amalee changes to kufr ‘itiqaadee.”

      So it was the Shaykh’s methodology to say “kufr ‘amalee” when he meant disbelief that is only related to one’s actions while this person believes in his heart that such an act is impermissible and sinful. And if you look at the post itself, you will see that mocking the religion apparently seems like only an outward action, but did the Shaykh say this is kufr ‘amalee? No, because his outward action in this case is clearly showing that this came from his heart as it is not possible for someone to mock the religion and feel in his heart that this is wrong! Hence, even though apparently this looks like kufr ‘amalee, the Shaykh still said this is actually kufr ‘itiqaadee.

      The same can be applied for what you mentioned, this would be kufr ‘itiqaadee in a usual circumstance because those who prostrate to idols surely worship them, love them, and believe this is correct, good and permissible. So in this case, it cannot be labelled as merely kufr ‘amalee.

    2. Also, if you check Shaykh Muhammad bin Jameel Zaynoo’s book on the Methodology of the Saved Sect, he says:

      Minor kufr (kufr asghar) does not expel the one who commits it from the fold of Islaam. It examples are as follows: 1) Kufr of the blessings… 2) The kufr of action… So this type of kufr does not take one outside the fold on Islaam, as opposed to the kufr of belief” (p.134-135)
